Gender for Green Politics: Women in Power

In every country in every continent, women are fighting on a global scale to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression. They make their voices heard form the streets to parliament fighting for a world with gender equality, freedom and free from oppression.

Green Thought Association supports freedom of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics within the framework of gender equality and feminism. We support women who fight to exist in a very patriarchic political scene and who create space for women in politics. Green European Foundation and Green Thought Association are cooperating to organize a conference on Saturday the 17th of October 2020 and bringing activists, politicians and academics from different countries together to share their experiences, to show solidarity with each other and to network.

In the first session of the conference where the international guests will speak, we will have a chance to listen to Poland’s Green Party Co-spokesperson and member of the parliament Malgorzata Tracz and young environmental and human rights activist Helena Gualinga. They will talk about the local struggle in their countries and where it stands in the global feminist movement. The general framework of this session will be provided by Nil Mutluer, an academic and member of the Green Party in Turkey.

Over the past several months in Turkey, the feminist agenda has mostly been shaped by the discussions over the Istanbul Convention, also known as The Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. Women have been organizing campaigns in order to not lose this Convention. In an environment where the government has been continually banning 25th of November and 8th of March women marches, women in Turkey don’t give up their acquired rights. They have been fighting back to protect the Convention in every way. In the second part of the conference, we will be listening to the women from Turkey who keep the struggle alive from different aspects.

The conference will be in English and Turkish. Simultaneous translation will be done for both languages.
